A Fishing Lodge, a Foreigner, and a Fiasco
Expressions! Theater of Lakeville will be performing Larry Shue's "The Foreigner" at the Lakeville Area Arts Center August 1, 2, 8 & 9 at 7:30 p.m. and August 3 & 10 at 2:00 p.m.
A fishing lodge in rural Georgia is often visited by Froggy LeSeuer, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time Froggy has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So Froggy, before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should, evil plans and many other revelations that are made with the thought that Charlie doesn't understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax .
Performances are at the Lakeville Area Arts Center, 20965 Holyoke Ave. Tickets are $10 each and can be ordered by calling 952-985-4640.
Lakeville: Small Town Feel, Big-Time Art Festival
Lakeville will host its 6th annual Art Festival, an event that provides an artistic playground for both children and adults. The Festival will be held on September 20-21 in historic downtown Lakeville on the grounds of the Lakeville Area Arts Center.
The Festival's theme, "Finding Peace Through Art," was chosen to convey to attendees the creative process behind all mediums of art. With approximately 50 featured artist exhibits, several art demonstrations, and the Youth Art Tent—a big hit with the wee-ones—art enthusiasts of all ages are encouraged to join in the fun. To amp up the level of entertainment, during the Festival, live music and cultural dance performances will take place while local food vendors will provide an array of mouth-watering cuisine.
Shelly Carney, Director of the Lakeville Art Festival, reports that planning is well underway with the help of community businesses and the Festival’s volunteers. "We’re pleased to have such terrific support from our community. The success of the Art Festival is largely attributed to our many local business sponsors, generous in-kind donations, and 100 or so volunteers working together to make it a great experience for everyone."
Last year the two-day Festival was sponsored by over 20 companies and attracted over 5,000 attendees from all over the state. According to Carney, this year’s attendance is expected to be even greater. "Our goal is to put on a premier art show that benefits all participants, and it’s working. The artists, many of whom come to Lakeville from as far away as Florida, speak so highly of the Festival. For local businesses, the Festival is truly a win-win situation because it provides a great opportunity for them to give back to Lakeville while marketing their business."
For those interested in finding a great piece of art or want to simply enjoy Lakeville’s small town charm and take in some local flavor, music and dance, mark your calendar for September 20, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., and September 21, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The address for the Lakeville Area Arts Center is 20965 Holyoke Avenue, Lakeville, MN 55044.
